Sherman Residence

Santa Monica, CA — Rick Clemenson, Architect

The Sherman Residence is a compact modern home that balances sculptural form with everyday livability. Composed of crisp volumes and layered elevations, the design emphasizes light, openness, and a strong indoor–outdoor connection while maintaining privacy within a dense urban context.

Inside, the home is organized around a vertical circulation core that visually links multiple levels, allowing daylight to penetrate deep into the interior. Open-plan living spaces flow seamlessly into the kitchen and dining areas, where warm wood finishes contrast with clean white surfaces and steel detailing. Large windows, sliding glass doors, and balconies extend living areas outward, creating multiple moments of engagement with the surrounding landscape.

Exterior elements—such as cantilevered balconies, expressive railings, and carefully proportioned openings—give the residence a distinct architectural identity while reinforcing its modern character. Thoughtful material choices and integrated detailing reflect a design-build approach that prioritizes clarity, efficiency, and craftsmanship.

Designed by Richard Clemenson, the Sherman Residence exemplifies a refined modern residential language, combining precise geometry, natural light, and functional planning into a cohesive and enduring home.
