Shore Residence

Seal Beach, CA — Rick Clemenson, Architect

The Shore Residence in Seal Beach is a study in light, geometry, and coastal modernism—an early demonstration of Richard Clemenson’s ability to create homes that feel simultaneously sculptural and deeply livable. The design is organized around crisp white volumes punctuated by warm wood accents, expressive steel detailing, and sweeping expanses of glass that frame the Southern California landscape.

Inside, the residence unfolds through a series of interconnected spaces shaped by natural light. Vertical slot windows, clerestories, and full-height glazing introduce shifting patterns of illumination throughout the day, giving the interiors a sense of quiet dynamism. The central stair, a signature design moment, anchors the home with its clean lines, stainless-steel railings, and interplay of shadow and form.

Living spaces are open yet distinctly defined, with generous ceiling heights and custom built-ins that support both aesthetic clarity and everyday function. The connection to the outdoors is equally intentional: balconies, patios, and a pool courtyard create a fluid relationship between interior rooms and the surrounding environment.

The Sherman Residence exemplifies Clemenson’s commitment to precise detailing, refined proportions, and a seamless integration of architecture, interior design, and landscape—resulting in a home that feels timeless, luminous, and uniquely Californian.
